Santa Tecla in Sitges: The role of children

Sitges celebrates two big festivals throughout the year: Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla. The latter, which is celebrated on September 22 and 23, is known as the “Festa Major Petita” and has a special charm. Santa Tecla is the patron saint of Sitges and her festival is a celebration in her honor. It is a popular festival declared of national interest by the Generalitat of Catalonia, and although it is smaller than Sant Bartomeu, it is no less important. During these two days, Sitges is filled with life and color. The streets are decorated, music plays everywhere and neighbors gather to enjoy various activities. Some of the most notable are:

Cercavila: A festive parade through the streets of the town with giants, big heads, musicians, devils and popular dances.

Contests: Different contests are organized, such as photography, where participants show their vision of the party.

Exhibitions: Exhibitions related to the culture and history of Sitges are inaugurated.

Musical performances: There are concerts and performances of different musical styles for all tastes.

Children’s activities: Special activities are organized for the little ones, such as workshops and games.

The Santa Tecla festival has a more intimate and family atmosphere than that of Sant Bartomeu. It is an opportunity for neighbors to come together and enjoy local traditions. In addition, the participation of children stands out, who have their own morning show with giants and dragons made by themselves. Santa Tecla in Sitges is a celebration full of tradition and joy. It is special and beautiful, not only because it is celebrated in honor of the town’s patron saint, but also because it is a celebration closer to the town, without so much crowding.

This year’s activities start this weekend to the next one. This is 2024’s program.
